This breastplate design takes influence from both indigenous Latin American ornaments of tribes such as the Muisca (Colombia) and the Rei Puta, Rei Niho designs in traditional Maori Whakairo (carving). Some people view the breastplate as a symbol of wisdom and tranquillity, and it is said to bring good fortune to the wearer.
Our stones are sourced from Ngai Tahu Poutini with a certificate of Authenticity and the Arahura River on the West Coast of the South Island. All of our pieces are carved by hand and finished off using the traditional sanding method by hand with a sandstone stick. We follow the Maori Whakairo protocols closely. We strive to craft Taonga that honours the traditions of the Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa and make a homage to our indigenous people of the land in Colombia, who were also fine artisans and craftsmen.
