This beautiful  medium size Korupepe has been crafted by hand in our Oro Negro Studio on Karangahape Road out of New Zealand Kawakawa Raukaraka Poutini Ngai Tahu Pounamu certified stone  from the West Coast of the South Island.

This piece has been finished off with an adjustable 4-plaited black waxed cord. And paua shell inlays

Carved inspired in the traditional Maori Hei Korupepe that represents the New Life and growing of the Taniwha

Moving forward under guardianship of the Manaia Poutini

The Koru design is inspired by one of New Zealand’s most sacred symbols of nature, the silver fern. The fern begins life in a spiral shape before it fully matures. The traditional Koru design becomes a Koru Pepe when the face of a mythical sea creature, known by Māori as mania is incorporated into the design. Much like the young fern, the Koru design represents nature, a new life or new beginnings.

New Zealand Greenstone, known to Maori as Pounamu, and the rest of the world as jade, is a historically and culturally important stone to all New Zealanders.

Maori have used the stone in rituals and as statements of rank and power. It protects us when traveling abroad, and is noted for having healing powers.

OUR STONES:

Our stones are sourced from the Arahura River on the West Coast of the South Island. All of our pieces are carved by hand and finished off using the traditional method of sanding by hand with a sandstone stick. We follow the Maori Whakairo protocols closely and we strive to craft Taonga that honour the traditions of the Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa and that make an homage to our own Tangata Whenua of Colombia who were also fine artisans and craftsmen.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

Our Taonga & jewellery is made of high-quality metals and stones, that are made to be worn daily however they can still be damaged through contact with harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures, and collisions. Keep your Taonga/jewellery away from chlorinated water as it can erode the metal, Avoid any hard knocks and scratches to your stones. If your stones look dry, rub it against your skin or rub a small amount of natural oil such as olive or coconut on to it.
