MEANING OF POROWHITA:

The Porowhita Circle of Life symbolises life and love and oneness. The porowhita pendant can aid the wearer in being centred in the present.Wearing a porowhita can help you find peace, grounding, connection and good health. It reflects the eternal cycle of life and death within the cyclical nature of our universe. Our journey in life has no beginning or end according to te ao Māori. The porowhita can represent your process of discovery and rediscovery as you move through life.

ABOUT US:

Crafted by hand at the Oro Negro Carving Studio on Karangahape Road. We follow Māori Whakairo protocol in crafting taonga that honours the traditions of tangata whenua o Aotearoa. As Colombian carvers, our practice is also about connecting with our own Indigenous South American art forms.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
Our Taonga is made to be worn daily. You can shower with it on. It is advised that during physical activity you take off your pounamu or wear it under your clothing. Pounamu will absorb your skin’s oils, so if your taonga is looking dry you can rub it against your skin. Alternatively, you can rub into the stone a tiny amount of natural oil such as coconut or olive oil for shine.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
Please note that although we try our best to photograph our Pounamu as true to life as possible, colour may vary due to our studio lighting.

Gifting Pounamu

Pounamu is a tangible expression of love and appreciation, a physical gift that carries the essence of New Zealand's land and culture. Sourced from the heart of Aotearoa, this precious stone serves as a reminder of the significant place we call home, imbued with the rich cultural meaning of Māori whakairo (carving) traditions. When we gift pounamu, we are not only sharing a piece of New Zealand’s history but also intertwining it with our own personal stories, creating a connection that honors both the land and the people we cherish.

We invite you, when gifting a piece of pounamu, to wear it yourself before presenting it to your loved one. During this time, reflect on the blessing they are in your life. As the stone absorbs your skin oils, it will carry a part of you, creating a deeply personal connection that your friend will cherish.
